Daniel Tjarks Receives the 2025 Stein Rokkan Travel Grant Award

The Committee on Organization, Procedures, and Awards (COPA) is delighted to announce that Daniel Tjarks, a PhD candidate at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Stein Rokkan Travel Grant Award. COPA Chair Serge Granger will present the Stein Rokkan Travel Grant Award to Daniel Tjarks at the Closing Ceremony of the 2025 World Congress in Seoul on 16 July.

The Stein Rokkan Award is one of the travel grants that the association began offering its members in the early 1990s. The purpose of the Stein Rokkan fellowships is to assist graduate students in participating in the World Congress by covering their essential travel and accommodation costs. 


Daniel Tjarks is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon. His work is situated at the intersection of political economy, urban studies, and human geography. In his doctoral research, Daniel explores power structures and multi-level governance dynamics in the urban system of post-war Angola. This research is supported by a PhD scholarship from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

Prior to joining the University of Lisbon, Daniel earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from the University of Tübingen, Germany, where he also worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Comparative Politics and European Integration. He received a master’s degree in political science, specializing in political economy, from the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Daniel’s research interests include urban development, multi-level governance, power, and participatory democracy. His latest work explores “metropolitan bias” in urban development, the role of international organizations in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, and urban development under Portuguese colonialism. Daniel’s research has appeared in Space and Polity, the Journal of Urban Affairs, and the e-Journal of Portuguese History.
